Some people care about the quality of the housing, others that the equipment is as mobile as possible, others on the best warranty. A few years ago, a new manufacturer appeared on the laptop market. It is the Clevo company. Although few people have heard about this brand, it is a producer of the highest quality equipment. Clevo laptops

pros:

  • great looks
  • good speeds (i7+16GB of RAM + NVMe (upgraded it to 1TB NVMe)
  • outdoor capable screen
    • battery runtime aprox 5h (heavily depending on the CPU usage as the i7 is no ARM (faster per core, but also needs way more Watts)
      • means: when the sun is beating down on the device, text is still readable (a bit like with the kindle devices)
      • cons: if the user wears polarizing sunglases, the visibility goes down to zero (black)
    • the case does not heat up as bad as with the black thinkpads
  • keyboard: is okay imho thinkpad better
    • comes per default with keyboard backlighting 🙂
    • and a tux penguin instead of a win button 🙂
    • what would be great: to place the Fn button just as the Lenovos, otherwise it is a major hazzle for ex Lenovo users to get used to this layout
  • custom not-off-she-shelf bios by INSYDE (Taiwan)
  • can be ordered with LTE module (the sim slot is very small and in the front-left, if OS says “No SIM” try inserting simcard “backwards”)
  • no GNU Linux vs NVIDIA compatibility problems, as it is has an Intel Iris Xe Graphics GPU

cons:

  • wireless signal receiver pretty bad (compared to a lenovo t440)
    • t440 can still get working wifi signal, tuxedo drops connection or does not connect at all (tested under Ubuntu and Debian, bad wifi antenna?)
  • no water resistance at all (any tests?)
  • speaker & microphone sound pretty bad (unusable for online conferencing)
  • no dedicated LAN port
    • a USB-C to LAN dongle is required (bad, bad, bad!)
      • so off we go to the USB-C to LAN dongle speed tests…
  • creepy webcam with nightvision X-D
    • guess with windows it is used to detect if user is sitting in front of notebook-laptop for automatic face recognition & device unlock (creepy)
  • still has that Intel ME
    • but can be disabled via INSYDE BIOS?
    • Tuxedo says they will be able to ship with Coreboot soon
    • definately manufacturing quality problems with the casing…

Ubuntu?

The only “officially” supported by TUXEDO GNU Linux distribution is Ubuntu.

But other distros should just work. (tested Debian (of course 🙂

DEBIAN WILL ONLY BOOT IF “Force UEFI installation” is selected!

and SUSE TumbleWeed)

Not a fan as Canonical-Ubuntu surely does not give a damn about UNIX K.I.S.S

LAN transfer speeds meassured between the tuxedo-system76 and a directly LAN connected thinkpad:

tuxedo-tomte = tuxedo control center

So far so good. While having many neat innovative features, there is still some work to be done to catch up with “the gorilla in the room” Lenovo, HP and Dell.

Neat but the tomte-package did not install properly and kept trying to re-install (error logs are provided at the very end of this article)

Don’t even try to mess with the tuxedo boot dongles, just 1:1 copy a GNU Linux iso to stick and boot setup from there.

Because it would not install properly under Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, after a few days went: (no negative sideffects so far)
