in theory

GNU Linux support is (mostly) pretty well done by brother’s setup.sh script the user can get from here:

the script:

wget https://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf006893/linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.4-1.gz

# be root
su - root
# unpack
gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.4-1
# then
chmod +x linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.4-1
then run
./linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.4-1

# it will ask for model give model like

MFC9460CDN

# it will ask if user wants to specify IP say YES (8)

8

# then enter IP address of printer

192.168.0.XXX

# it will download and install a bunch of files:

  • brscan-skey-0.3.2-0.amd64.deb
  • mfc9460cdnlpr-1.1.1-5.i386.deb
  • mfc9460cdncupswrapper-1.1.1-5a.i386.deb
  • uninstaller_brscan4
  • mfc9460cdncupswrapper-1.1.1-5.i386.deb
  • uninstaller_brscan-skey
  • brscan4-0.4.11-1.amd64.deb
  • mfc9460cdnlpr-1.1.1-5a.i386.deb
  • uninstaller_MFC9460CDN

and then ask if user wants to do a test print

the printer SHOULD work at this point if not read below:

fixing “The printer is in use” withheld job on Debian 13

hostnamectl; # tested on
Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie)
Kernel: Linux 6.12.30-amd64
Architecture: x86-64

make sure printer is accessible by browsing to it’s ip address should open web interface and look like this:

also while on it for security reasons change the user and administrator password “The most severe vulnerability: Brother releases firmware updates for hundreds of printers to address security issues“)

(default is: usr: admin pwd: access)

assuming cups is installed: navigate the browser to http://localhost:631/

it will ask for the system’s root password (yes the root root password also used during sudo or su – root)

go to administration -> manage printers

enter socket://192.168.0.xxx (ip of brother printer configured for example via printer buttons same as where web interface can be reached)

select the appropriate driver (probably the current one installed)

continue… continue… save

so it shall look like this:

try to print again: WORKS!? 😀

  • put on ur favorite song and dance to it no matter who is around UNTIL THE MUSIC STOPS 😀
  • then DONATE 3 bucks THANKS! 😀 (or drop a nice mail)

health risks of laser printers:

laser printers are reliable machines that can print 50000 pages without breaking BUT printing so many pages via laser and toner is no good for air quality, which might affect health of humans (not robots) catastrophically (lung cancer but never smoked? here we go)

please for the sake of user’s health:

  • get a lot of air cleaning plants
  • NEVER put laser printers in living room sleeping room or kitchen
    • if this is not possible switch to ink jet printer
  • in the office the printer should ideally have it’s own room with ventilation
  • attach those expensive tesa air filters to the printer’s inlet and outlet
    • possibly change them every year or at least every 3 years
