Installing PPD Files ======================== See Readme-Install.txt for installation directions. ================================ 2. Configuring Printers in CUPS ================================ ------------------------------------------------------ 2.1 Define your printer using the CUPS Web Interface. ------------------------------------------------------ 1. Open a Web Browser and access the CUPS Administration Page by using the following URL and select continue. http://localhost:631/admin When prompted for username, use root and root's password. On SuSE systems, you'll need to create an account with lppasswd and use this account instead of root. 2. Select 'Add Printer', enter a queue name in the Name field and select continue. 3. Select 'AppSocket/HP JetDirect' for the Device type and enter the following Device URI and select continue. socket://printer_hostname:9100 Replace 'printer_hostname' with the Printer's Hostname or IP Address. 4. Choose manufacturer name from the Make list followed by your printer model from the Model list and select Continue. If you intend to send fax from your computer using your fax-capable printer, choose either the Fax or PostScript variant of the printer model you are installing and select Continue. This is only available for OSes with CUPS 1.4 or later. This will create the printer queue. After the print queue has been created, you can set the queue defaults, by selecting 'Printers' and 'Configure Printer'. ----------------------------------------------------- 2.2 Define your printer using the CUPS command line. ----------------------------------------------------- 1. Create the queue with the lpadmin command. # lpadmin -p queue_name -v socket://printer_hostname:9100 \ -P /usr/share/cups/model/Printer_PPD/Printer.ppd or # lpadmin -p queue_name -v socket://printer_hostname:9100 \ -P /usr/share/ppd/Printer_PPD/Printer.ppd 2. Enable the queue and set the queue to accept print jobs. If the version of your CUPS is lower than 1.2 # /usr/bin/enable queue_name # /usr/sbin/accept queue_name If you are using CUPS version 1.2 onward. # /usr/sbin/cupsenable queue_name # /usr/sbin/accept queue_name Notes: a. Replace queue_name with your actual queue name. b. Replace printer_hostname with the printer's hostname or IP Address. c. Replace 'Printer.ppd' with the appropriate PPD filename. See the following directory for available PPDs. /usr/share/cups/model/Printer_PPD or /usr/share/ppd/Printer_PPD =============================================== 3. Print using CUPS command line print options =============================================== A list of supported print queue options can be access by typing: # lpoptions -p queue_name -l Find the property name and value that you would like to change and add it to the lp print command. # lp -d queue_name -o property_name=property_value file_name For example, if you have a printer queue (lab_printer) that is currently set to print only single-sided pages, and you need to print a two-sided report, you can specify the change on the command line. First, determine if the printer queue supports the feature(s) you want to use (in this case, two-sided or duplex printing), and enter the appropriate command. For this example, you would type: # lpoptions -p lab_printer -l The lpoptions output would then include: Duplex/Duplex: *None DuplexNoTumble DuplexTumble Find the property name and value that controls duplexing: Duplex=DuplexNoTumble Type: # lp -d lab_printer -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble my_report.ps ==================================================================== 4. Known Issues (Some issues may not be applicable to your printer) ==================================================================== ----------------- 4.1 Localization. ----------------- Localization is only supported on CUPS 1.2 or higher.
